Creation and history of Puerto Colombia
Puerto Colombia is one of the municipalities located northeast of the department of Atlántico, founded by the Cuban engineer Francisco Javier Cisneros on December 31, 1888. In its beginnings, the old pier was built and inaugurated in 1893 “More than 130 years ago”, which served as Barranquilla's maritime terminal for the loading and unloading of goods and people, connected by a railroad; The pier became one of the most remarkable engineering works of Colombia during the first four decades of the twentieth century, since it was the first international dock in the country and at the time the second longest dock in the world.
The memorable dock of Puerto Colombia
For many years, the Puerto Colombia dock was the hub of foreign trade in Colombia. However, in 1936, the Bocas de Ceniza canal was built, which allowed ships to reach the new maritime terminal near downtown Barranquilla. As a result, the Puerto Colombia wharf was condemned to oblivion and began its progressive deterioration.
From industry to tourism
In spite of the fact that the port activity was prohibited in the 1940's to enter into complete decadence, thanks to residents of Puerto Colombia, who voted for a change in this place, the pier shone again as a tourist spot where its history and beauty was remembered as an attraction for locals and visitors. However, the onslaught of strong waves and the lack of maintenance for many years, collapsed many sections of the pier until it collapsed, restricting the access of tourists and condemning it to abandonment.
A new dawn
The restoration of the pier became a priority to revitalize this historic infrastructure and boost local tourism. Therefore, not only was a new pier built, but also the municipality's central square, known as the Malecón del Mar, was completely renovated.

How easy it is to get to Puerto Colombia
To get to Puerto Colombia, you can take the Troncal del Caribe highway from Barranquilla. It is also possible to arrive from Cartagena de Indias via the Cartagena - Barranquilla highway and the Circunvalar de la Prosperidad, which runs along the entire coastal area. Another option is to use the Troncal del Caribe, which adds approximately 30 minutes to the trip.

Discover his heritage
Once in Puerto Colombia, you will see the beautiful Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, built in 1924. This sacred precinct is full of history and devotion. Its name pays homage to the patron saint of local sailors and transporters. Despite having completed its first century, the church continues to celebrate its importance. In 2021, it was declared a Marian Sanctuary, the first in the Atlantic. Every July 16, the inhabitants of Puerto Colombia commemorate the Day of the Virgen del Carmen, elaborating altars on the terraces of their houses. The Window of Dreams pays homage to the foreign immigrants who arrived in the country through this municipality, symbolizing the hope and opportunities they found on these shores.
